BURKE AND WILLS
Robert OHara Burke born in 1820 in
Ireland served in the Austrian Army
and the Irish Constabulary before
emigrating to Australia in 1853 where
he joined the Police as inspector. In
1860 with a companion W. J. Wills he
crossed the continent of Australia from
Victoria in the north to Flinders in the
South, the first men ever to do so.
Unfortunately, on the return journey
in 1861, he and his companion died of
thirst and starvation in the desert.
Statues to their memory are at Mel-
bourne.
