    Description

Offering for your consideration a splendid, large antique Quimper jardiniere dating from about 1885.
This handsome oval mold features twin panels. Each side depicts a different scene from 19th century French peasant folk life.
One side features a family scene of a seated mother with her baby in a cradle beside her. Two older siblings are playing with the little one. Their pipe smoking father stands proudly viewing the scene.
The second side shows a standing family of four.  The mother is spinning flax on her distaff with their older daughter carrying a jug.  The younger daughter is shyly leaning against her father's side in a most endearing pose. (I have never seen this most unusual pose before.)
Both scenes are quite desirable. This mold generally shows a Breton wedding with a bride and groom plus two musicians on one panel and men smoking or fishing on the other panel.
The handles are applied in a lovely, decorative shape and painted with a raised shield of ermine tails, which are the symbol of Brittany.
The piece measures 14.5" in length by 8.5" wide by 5.4" tall.
It is signed HB Quimper and the number 5.  The #5 painter is coveted by Quimper collectors for her intricacy of painted details.
The jardiniere is in excellent antique condition save for the tiny feet. The toe tips have had some wear over the decades and have now been professionally restored to perfection. It has been priced accordingly. The piece displays beautifully and makes a wonderful statement.
Thank you for your visit to this charming Quimper jardiniere with lovely eye appeal and outstanding rare scenes on each panel.
