Description
Offering for your consideration an unusual HB Quimper "shield" shape "secouette" snuff bottle or "tabatiere" tobacco bottle dating from about the 1930-1940's..This richly detailed snuff bottle depicts a nicely painted peasant man musician, who is seated in a meadow and playing his flute (bombarde). The reverse side has a delicate flower pattern with the tiny four blue dot design. The side has a bold and rich blue on yellow acanthus leaf trim in the "decor riche" manner.
The piece measures 3 1/4" long and is in excellent antique condition.
It is signed beneath the man on the grass HB Quimper and also has "Josephine" in very fine script written faintly above the flowers on the reverse side. Since these snuffs were often given as tokens of love and/or friendship, this testifies to that charming custom. Evidently this was commissioned by someone with love in mind. This is the first time I have ever seen a snuff actually carry a person's name i.e. It is most endearing!
